cnbc poll, and a national deficit that will pass the $1 trillion mark tomorrow for the fiscal year for the fourth straight year. conventional wisdom saying that president obama should be losing, but there's a slew of national and swing state polls that show president obama building a small lead against republican rival mitt romney. joining me now, tameka simms, and lynn sweet. good afternoon to both of you ladies. >> hello. >> good afternoon. >> let's take a quick look at the polling here. president obama up by five in a fox news poll, six in a bloomberg poll, three in a politico poll, seven points in a "national journal" poll. why do you think that the president is edging out mitt romney in these polls, when the economic recovery has been so slow? >> well, it's a fairly complicated answer, and a lot of it has to do with voter attitudes towards the economy, less so than voter attitudes toward president obama or mitt romney. in many ways, voters have gotten used to the idea of a poor economy, even a lackluster one. and they've kind of gotten used to it. a quarter of the people who s
his stances around immigration. here is a candidate looking at a huge deficit in some of these swing states, deficits among hispanics, deficits among women. he's got to make ground up in this 90 minutes. it's not a long time. he has to please republicans who have been calling for him to get more specific in terms of his plans around tax reform and all sorts of other ideas he has. he has a real tall order going into this debate. >> governor romney is dogged about the 47% remark. i want to show the interview he did this week with a local affiliate. >> if you could go back to that fund-raiser, would you have said it differently? >> it's difficult for me to know how they will cobble 51% of the people. i'm going to be a president for the 100% of the people. i demonstrated throughout my life. >> the question should be if you could go back, would you sweep that room for cameras to make sure you weren't being recorded. will that answer be enough when asked about this? as he is sure to be asked about this tomorrow night. >> i'm sure, obviously, that was a very inartful statement he said. i'm
specifics whether it's the american jobs act or whether it's his plan to responsible bring down the deficit by $4 trillion. this is specifics that are coming out of our ears specifics. mitt romney -- this debate and the issue you raised is more about how they see the country and mitt romney has made clear and i was watching that interview with absolute disbelief as i'm sure many americans were that he thinks people making $50,000 a year, that's a fire fighter, a nurse, a teacher, those people should pay 1 a. higher rate than people making millions. and this is a real difference between their views of the world, that i views of country and what their priorities are and how their prities will impact their plans. and that's a central debate in this election over the next 40 something days. >> i have to ask you, though, because you've been getting a lot of krcritics about the fact that the president would sit with the ladies "the view" and not take any one-on-ones. and nothing wrong with the interview with helthem, it's ju the timing. why not wait and instead of opening up such a vulnerable att
-dollar deficits? >> no. >> so, ben, mitt romney has raised $6 million to president obama's $2.8 million. the super pacs as i know you're aware has fire power to release. when that happens in conjunction with the debates, do you fear an even tighter race here? >> well, mitt romney has to pre sent a plan. that's what these advertisements won't be able to do. the burden is on him to explain why returning to the same economic policies that caused the crisis in the first place, more tax cuts for millionaires and billionaires, stripping it over wall street will somehow unleash job creation when it hasn't in the past. ultimately they here not building on the ground. we've been on the ground for the past four years. our organizers and supporters talking to their neighbors and communities. they may be able to build a 72-hour turnkey operation but they won't have the same roots in the community that we've been building over the past four years. that will be stronger than any negative advertisement on the air for special interest groups. >> super pac commercials may miss out on the specifics but the debates
, a trade that works for america, deficit reducti reduction, and being a champion for small business, which is not what the president has done. and as we get in the debates it will be critical to show the contrast between governor romney and the president. the good thing is wasserman schultz down played the president's expectations as expected by the democrats, but he is the gifted speaker. the problem is, he does not have the gift of a positive record to run on. the economy is in the toilet and t current news we have on informed policy is troubling. the administration knew this was a terrorist attack within the first 24 hours yet they continue to say this is the result of a video in a movie trailer, put ambassador rice out there being extremely dishonest with the american people. that's troubling. and those troops will come out in the debates. >> alice, we've gone to war with countries saying they were responsible for nerch when they really weren't. i'm talking about iraq. give the white house a little leeway here on figuring out exactly what's what to go with the facts. thursday power pan
minded, very flinty, cares a great deal about the deficit and taxes, even there he hasn't gained any advantage, despite being associated with the ryan plan. >> dante, if governor romney comes out big wednesday, if there's some big, bold new policy introduced at the debate in denver, how does that play? >> it may give romney a second chance. i think romney really needs to have a clear victory next week to throw new hampshire back into the mix. i mean, certainly, there is still some volatility here. no one's saying it's over here in new hampshire, but i think the thing is, new hampshire's behaving just like it did four years ago. nothing in the past four years has changed new hampshire's essential character as this democratic-leaning bellwether. >> last question here, ten seconds. we know that the state has been inundated with tv and web ads, obviously. talk to me really quickly about the ground game for governor romney. how would you characterize the governor's ground game in new hampshire? >> you know, it's somewhat -- it compares to obama, although obama got a head start, really, in
and not having some larger deficit when they get out of school. that's going to do it for this hour. don't go anywhere, "now" with alex wagner is coming up. i know a lot to talk about beuse we've been seein both ckorthhis morning from cgi to the u.n. and now the mitt romney and education nation. >> it is a big day in the big apple, thomas, with everything from education, foreign policy and free speech on the menu. it is tuesday, september 25th, and this is "now." >>> joining me
to the deficit. will wednesday be the night that he finally gives voters specifics? >> right. i think a debate is an opportunity to provide more specifics, i think they have provided a lot of specifics. and i think the overall point here is that congressman ryan was making, is that they offer a clear choice. of creating jobs, growing the economy, with their tax plan. or as president obama's plan would raise taxes on small businesses, job creators and do more to have a government-centered economy. which is what we've had for the past four years and we're still at 8.1 unemployment with 23 million americans looking for jobs. i think that president obama can't change the facts on wednesday night. and i think the contrast will be very clear. so i look forward to seeing that. >> let's talk about the figure, 8.1% unemployment that could be a conservative estimate. when you take into the fact the folks who have just stopped looking. that's been the economic reality in this country for several months now. but governor romney has not been able to move the needle. in fact in many of the battleground stat
